The Pink City — Rajasthan's royal capital.
Jaipur was founded in 1727 by Maharaja Jai Singh II and is among the first planned cities of India. The old city — painted pink to welcome the Prince of Wales in 1876 — retains its colour and its character.
Amber Fort, rising from the Aravalli hills 11 km from the city, is Jaipur's most dramatic sight. The City Palace complex, Jantar Mantar observatory and the impossibly ornate Hawa Mahal complete the essential Jaipur picture.
Jaipur is also the natural start or end point of the Rajasthan Golden Triangle — combining with Jodhpur and Jaisalmer for a classic tour of the state's greatest cities.
