About Jodhpur

The Blue City — Rajasthan's most dramatic skyline.

Founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, Jodhpur sits at the edge of the Thar Desert. Mehrangarh Fort — one of India's largest and most formidable — rises 122 metres above the old city, its walls seeming to grow directly from the rock.

The old city below is famously painted blue — traditionally the colour of Brahmin homes, though the practice has spread throughout the neighbourhood. From the fort ramparts, the effect is extraordinary.

Jodhpur is also the natural midpoint on the Jaisalmer road — and the Jodhpur to Jaisalmer road trip, passing through desert villages and scrubland, is one of Rajasthan's great drives.
